Temperley Summer 2022

More is more. The 1970’s Pattern and Decoration movement frames a sensual new agenda for Temperley’s Spring Summer 2022 collection. Myriad elements collide: the glamour of Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile collages with girlish cross-stitch motifs; hothouse palms cross with Moroccan mosaics. Alice Temperley weaves them together like Arachne to create deft new visions of modern bohemian glamour.

At the centre of the collage is a forceful feminine id. From pioneering author Agatha Christie, to collage artist Maria Schapiro who challenged the patriarchal structure of the art world, the collection’s muse is a woman who trusts and follows her own raw creative soul.

Spring

A ravishing hothouse green anchors the spring collection in the haze of the tropics. At its most potent in lengths of silk, it’s draped into an empire line gown and a louche wrap dress, which aptly recall the outrageous glamour of John Guillermin’s 1978 Death on the Nile.

Safari elements play out in relaxed top-stitched denim suiting and easy-fit jumpsuits, layered with ravishing, embroidered house coats for a laidback, barefoot elegance. The Palmae print is a feat of engineering, layering wicker rattan furniture elements with zebra print and hand glided geometric motifs for an otherworldly phantasmagoria.

Silhouettes are languorous and decoration is unabashed: the Dreamer dresses are gilded liberally with recycled sequins in shades of blue iris and seashell, whilst the Christie and Natascha stories are loaded with ruffles in a statement of joyous feminine attitude.

Summer

Airy cotton voiles and ether-light silks shape an unbearable lightness for the long summer days. Temperley’s deep respect for craft shines through hand-painted hobbyist inspired prints, trompe l’oeil ribbon work and deft collages that pay tribute to artist Maria Schapiro’s work. The intricate stitches of the Valerie story recall Robert Zakanitch’s ‘Garden of Ornament’ paintings, with fantasy florals showcasing a beauty that is instinctive rather than learned.

The piqued glamour of the spring collection softens into a beachy reverie, with artsy kaftans and cotton sundresses the mainstay. Sun-ripe hues of hot pink, cloudy blue and citrus twists light up feminine shapes made for sun-up to sun-down dressing.
